Towards Comprehensive and Sustainable Energy Security

Mauritania is undergoing a major transformation in the energy and electricity sector, thanks to an ambitious vision aimed at ensuring universal access to electricity by 2030. Through the implementation of comprehensive strategies, the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum is working to expand electricity networks, promote renewable energy, develop production and transmission infrastructure, and strengthen electrical interconnection with neighboring countries.
This vision focuses on achieving energy independence by diversifying energy sources and gradually transitioning to the optimal use of clean energy, ensuring energy security, reducing costs, and decreasing dependence on fossil fuels. To this end, several projects are underway, some of which are already in construction and others in the launch phase, to strengthen electricity production, ensure grid stability, and guarantee energy supply for all.

Strengthening the Reliance on Clean Energy

In recent years, Mauritania has focused on restructuring its renewable energy sector, successfully increasing the share of renewable energy in electricity production to 42%, with a future plan to increase this share through new investments in solar and wind energy.
Thanks to its vast renewable energy resources, the Ministry is also working to develop the green hydrogen sector, making Mauritania a candidate to lead the global green steel market, due to its massive iron ore reserves estimated at around 10 billion tons. These investments in renewable energy will also contribute to enhancing national energy security, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and attracting foreign investments in clean energy.
